Barn Cat Buddies Protocol for Safe Relocation

Thank-you for becoming a safe haven for a feral cat who has nowhere

else to go.   Please understand that cats in this program are FERAL which means

WILD animal.  They are NOT PETS and have no interest in human interaction*

Please do not touch or pet this or any other FERAL animal.*

For successful relocation of cats a period of 3 weeks of crating in a roomy dog

crate (large enough for food, water and litter box**) is required.  If you don’t have one, please contact FCHS or Diane. Cats who know each other can be crated together.

Alternatives to crating: A quiet stall where all four walls are totally enclosed.

If there is a hole in the wall of the stall, a feral cat will figure out how to escape. Another alternative is a small room like an office which does not have much traffic (people coming in and out).  We will be happy to print up a SIGN for situations like

this to help remind everyone to be careful.

The day before receiving your cats, it is important to have everything in place

(food, litter box, water bowl). Your barn buddies will come sterilized (spayed or neutered) and rabies vaccinated.  You will receive an adoption application and

Barn Buddy agreement to sign and Diane will walk you through the process.

*  There are people who work with FERAL cats that have socialized them and it is

not impossible to do so.  But for safety sake The BARN CAT BUDDIES Program asks that you agree to NO PHYSICAL CONTACT with the cats we bring you.

**  Litter boxes can be made from the cardboard liners that hold soda or cat cans in before they are put on grocery store shelves. You put newspaper in there and some cat litter on top.  You can also use aluminum pans that have some sides (not cookie sheets)

The day before releasing your Barn Buddies, consider the best place to leave food and water for the cats so they know where it is and can get to it easily. We can help you figure this out.  Having food and water elevated on a hay bale or in a loft will help the cats get to their food and not give other animals like pet dogs a chance to

help themselves. If you have dogs who tend to chase cats on your facility, we would like to discuss safe relocation of these cats with you further.  We truly thank you for helping this forgotten population of felines.
